Your Invading my Rights!!

Someone has an issue with the dress code. I wonder who it could be…???

Nisha Razack, Staffer

Feminist Poster

Today, in the window of the doors leading out to the hallways off of activities, a poster was written by a student about what they think of the school dress code.

The poster above reads, “I don’t think my shoulder, bra strap, belly-button, legs, or back is going to distract any male students or faculty. This Dress code is telling girls to cover up so that they don’t distract males because “boys will be boys”. It’s hot, Girls are going to wear shorts and tank tops and crop tops. We should stop teaching women to change so that they don’t have to fear men, and start teaching men to respect women. This is perpetuating rape culture.”

Honestly, I don’t agree with everything this person had said.

While I do absolutely agree that women should be able to wear shorts and that shoulders aren’t distracting, there’s a limit to how much a girl can show before it gets to be too much not to notice.

If a girl is wearing short shorts and a crop top that shows half of her womanly top parts hanging out, people are going to look because it is distracting and it is hard not to stare. But if a girl was wearing a dress that showed her shoulders but her boobs were covered, then it would be fine.

That being said, no matter how distracting the clothing a girl (or guy) is wearing, that does not give someone the right to touch them if they do not want to be touched.

By saying to a girl to cover up because they are provoking men and teen boys to touch them in inappropriate ways, is not right.

Yes certain clothes are distracting but to say to someone that they are the reason they are getting raped, is a horrible message to send to someone. Rapists are rapist because they are jerks with no concern for anyone else but themselves. They do what they want without care.

People get raped because person A can’t control themselves enough not to hurt another human being. Not because of the type of clothes person B is wearing.

This poster was put up without a stamp of approval from Mr. Cohen which is against school policy. Just for the record, I totally agree with civil disobedience as long as it is in a non-violent protest. Which clearly this poster is so whoever wrote that poster, I support you 100 percent for what you are doing.

I would like to have a name for the student who wrote this message and will try to update you guys as soon as possible.
