World Cup Recap: USA 1 – Iran 0

Joseph Serna, Staffer

The USMNT held out for a 1-0 victory over Iran today, leaping into the 2022 World Cup round of 16.

With the youngest lineup so far in the World Cup, the USMNT held up in their matchup against Iran today.

Following a draw against England last Friday, the USMNT beat Iran in the US’s third game of the Group B matches to advance to the round of 16. This was the two countries first matchup in over 20 years and second ever.

Christian Pulisic, USA, scored the only goal of the entire match in the 38th minute, injuring himself in the process. After the shot, Pulisic collided with Iran’s goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand. Pulisic was removed in the second half of the game.

The USMNT stayed strong throughout the entire match even with 9 minutes of added time, securing the victory. The team held Iran to only 4 shots and had a stronger possession of the ball over the course of the game.

Team USA takes on the Netherlands this Saturday, December 3rd. Expectations for the team are mixed, due to the team only scoring 2 goals throughout the World Cup. In high hopes, Pulisic is expected to play on Saturday. The winner of the match will play in the quarter finals, starting December 9th.
