Today, Wednesday, Dec. 11, students in Ms. Evan’s Honors 10 English class began a small art project based on the book they are reading in class, The Things They Carried. The project is due next Friday and Thursday for students.

Students must choose a character from the book and draw a picture of that character and what he or she represents, or how they have changed over time. The picture that the students draw can be from any character in the book that they choose to do. The drawing must be colored in something that is symbolic for the character they are drawing. Along with the drawing, students must create a letter from the character that they choose to another character in the book.

The letters must be typed and be a page and a half. But students can choose how to write the letter as long as the letter still pertains to their character or the book. The letter that the students write can also be typed in how their character would talk, do certain things, react to other people, or problems they are facing at the time. The project also needs to include a quick paragraph about what the picture represents and what they drew.

The project is to help students understand what the character might be going through during the book, and how these events changed them from the beginning of the book to where they are now.

“I think this is a pretty cool project to do in an English class,” Sophomore Emma Keohane said.
