The new Medical Careers class will be taking place in the lecture center every red morning from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. While this class is very early in the morning, it is a great opportunity for those who have interest and are going in the medical field after high school.

“ I’ve wanted to be a pediatrician since third grade,” senior Neha Lamsal said, “and for me, my pediatrician would have to be my biggest influence because she was so easy to connect and trust to since she’s been with me since I was a newborn.”

imageSo far, three speakers have presented to Smoky Hill students along with students from other schools, since the class is not just for those who go to Smoky Hill high school. This class is considered a 0-hour class because it is not during the regular school day, however students who take still get credit for the class.

“Well I’m taking it because I want to be a Pediatrician and I think being in this class is great exposure and the first steps going into a medical career,” Lamsal said.

There will be presenters from all around the medical field. They will be presenting about their jobs, what they do and how they do it. Some presenters could be Pathologists, Surgeons, Lawyers specified for the medical field, ETC. Also, there is field trips planned, such as the Cadaver Lab.

Once the students are in the class, they are asked, by Andrew Colella (a teacher at Smoky Hill, and the teacher of the Medical Careers class), to listen and pay respect to the speakers. At the end of each class, students will pick up a thank you note from the back of the room. With the blank thank you notes, students are supposed to write for the presenter, so later Mr.Colella can send them to the presenter.

“ I really enjoy the class because I get to hear all of the these medical professionals talk about their jobs which is cool,” Lamsal said.
