Hanson passed away a few months ago due to an accidental overdose because of his depression. A scholarship was recently made in his name, the Mitch Hanson Scholarship, for 2015 seniors.

According to Social Studies teacher Ryan Vaughn, Hanson’s parents and his brother created the scholarship to help students going to college with financial aid. The scholarship application provides the requirements for the applicants and what the process is.

“[Applicants must] have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA, demonstrate financial need based on current FAFSA [Free Application for Student Aid] or School Counselor verification, have applied to college for the Fall 2015 term (two or four year, or community college), be a U.S citizen or Permanent Resident,” listed the application page.

So far, students have been coming to pick up the application, which is located in the Social Studies resource center. Anyone who qualifies for the scholarship is welcomed to get an application and email Ryan Vaughn if they have any questions. The scholarship is good for any two-year, four-year, or community college.

“The family plans on offering this scholarship continuously and 1-3 applicants will be receiving the scholarship this year,” Vaughn said. “Mitch’s family will be looking at the applications and making their decision over Spring Break.”
