Smoky has stuck to the same red/green day schedule for years now. Other high schools are different, for example, having all their classes in one day or having a 4-day week schedule like Brighton High School. According to a teacher at Brighton High School, the 4-day schedule for them has been very helpful. They have talked about actually being able to have a weekend because Monday can be a work day for them. This schedule would not only be helpful for teachers but, it could give students an extra day to complete any homework or spend time with their families.
I think schools, including Smoky Hill High School, should seriously consider implementing a 4-day week schedule for several reasons. Firstly, it offers a solution to the rigid and often exhausting traditional schedule of five days a week. By condensing the school week into 4-days, both teachers and students can benefit from an additional day of rest and relaxation, leading to increased productivity and well-being.
Adopting a 4-day week could potentially improve academic performance. With an extra day made to catch up on assignments or seek additional help, students may be less stressed and have more time to focus on their studies. This could lead to higher grades and a more positive learning environment overall.
Furthermore, a 4-day week schedule could potentially save costs for the school district. With one fewer day of operation each week, schools could see reductions in expenses related to utilities, transportation, and maintenance. According to NCSL, “Research shows that the maximum possible cost savings for districts on a four-day week is 5.43%, but average savings range from 0.4% to 2.5%.”
Overall, switching to a 4-day week schedule at Smoky Hill High School could lead to a lot of benefits for both students and teachers and the school community as a whole.
