Teacher New, Math A

Some Smoky Hill students have had substitute teachers since the beginning of the school year. One math class has faced this problem because a teacher from the math department had a family emergency and was not able to be there on the first day of school. This caused a retired teacher to come back and teach the class until the school’s original teacher decided to come back, or the school finds another teacher.

Mrs. Howe is the retired teacher who was asked to come back and teach the math class for a short period of time. With the class not having a primary teacher, it creates an atmosphere where students pay less attention to the work they are doing.

Students feel that when the assignments aren’t being put in the grade book, they either don’t get it done, or they do and nobody really understands it.

“If you think about it, I don’t think anybody really cares so much because we don’t really have a legitimate teacher,” said Sophomore Jaylah Baca. “No one really does the work they just kind of blow it off. They don’t really have a plan for anything.”

The school has found a new teacher to take over the class. The new  teacher is from New Mexico and is getting ready to teach the class soon. Until the teacher is here Mrs. Howe will continue to teach the class.
“Mrs. Howe is a good teacher, but it’s just you know that she’s not our real teacher,” said Baca.
