Give Me What Like NYU?

Senior Amy Lee decided to make a joke out of her opportunity to sign the senior wall, but that joke didn’t last long.

The senior wall teases the current senior class all fall, while college admission representatives come to visit. It showcases last year’s seniors to let us all know where they are today.  It’s the college wall, that all seniors sign. Beginning in August, it is one of the most anticipated moments of senior year. The window allows students to show their creativity and school pride. Because several college admission representatives visit the Post Grad center every year, the window decor is a sense of pride, and is always kept appropriate…until this year.

Amy Lee is planning on going to NYU in the fall to study business. Her experience signing the wall, however, was unlike most seniors. Lee signed, “Give me brain like NYU.”  Almost immediately, it was taken down due to the sexual nature of the quote. Disappointed, but not surprised, Lee put the same quote up again, only a little smaller.

“I was kind of confused because it was big, and I thought it could’ve been erased because of the size,” Lee said.

The size was not the aspect which got it removed. Within days, Lee’s commitment joke was expunged for a second time. It then became obvious that size was not the reason. Eventually, she simply wrote NYU in order to avoid trouble.

“I mean, I was kind of worried about it, but I’ve been wanting to write that since I applied to NYU and I thought it was funny,” Lee said.

While Lee thought it was humorous, others disagree. Specifically Mrs. Connally, the Post Grad Secretary, and every seniors’ hero, had it removed promptly.

“I understand jokes, but the wall is made to be inspirational for the Smoky Hill community to see, and it isn’t very inspirational, that for sure. Not only that, but the college reps will see it and it reflects poorly on us,” Connally said.

As for the remaining seniors planning on taking a space on the windows, they are welcome to make their mark, as long as it represents Smoky Hill and themselves in a positive manner.
