Wary Halloween

Too many tricks and not enough treats

At 12:15 a.m. John Stanley Snorsky forcefully grabbed an 8-year-old-girl from her window in an attempted kidnapping in Aurora, Colorado, Oct. 28, 2013.

Due to the attempted kidnapping, parents are afraid of letting their children go out by themselves. Smoky Hill school resource officer Judy Lutkin said that it is not safe for children eight or younger to go out without adult supervision. As night closes in, the dangers of being out on the street increases. “I think that it is wrong to let 8-year-olds go trick-or-treating alone,” Lutkin said.

Lutkin believes that being in a group with adult supervision is the safest way to trick-or-treat. Young adults who trick-or-treat go back home late in the evening, too. Freshman Jessica Goldberg also agrees with Lutkin that it is safer to go in a big group or at least with someone. “I go home around 9,” Goldberg said.

The fact that teens and children go back home late at night increases the worries and concerns of parents. Goldberg explains that the scare of the attempted kidnapping has affected parents to be cautious. “My parents have been more wary,” Goldberg said.
