Juicy Fruit? Yuck!

Why Juicy Fruit is terrible, and how there could be a much better alternative.

Velencia Covarrubias, Staffer

Some may prefer the new cherry flavored Juicy Fruit gum. However after trying it for myself, I came to the conclusion that I have never crossed paths with a more disgusting gum in my entire life. As a teenager and passionate gum chewer, this new product is a monstrosity!

When I had my very first stick of cherry flavored Juicy Fruit, I didn’t mind it as much at first but then after a minute, it started to taste like cherry-flavored childrens cough syrup. A few more minutes, the gum got frothy and lost its flavor altogether.

Not to mention the smell! The pack alone had a stench like one wouldn’t believe. I kept an unopened package in my backpack for no more than an hour and my classmates commented on the stench. I can honestly say that it smells worse than sewage!

None the less, people still chew it. I see more Juicy Fruit in the halls than any other gum, even my favorite which is Trident Original. Though I’m not sure why, considering Trident is far better than Juicy Fruit.

Although Juicy Fruit has been around since 1893, the Juicy Fruit company still hasn’t bothered to change their recipe for this gum, unless to add more sugary flavors, such as cherry. A single piece is 8 calories whereas Trident is only 3.5 calories. There haven’t been any healthy changes within this gum at all. Just like most things in our food industry today, it only gets more sugary and gross.

Trident has long lasting flavor, and according to the Walgreens website, it has 30% less calories than any other sugared gum. It has also been approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) because of its ability to prevent cavities after a meal by chewing it for at least twenty minutes. This is because Trident gum stimulates saliva and this prevents plaque and allows the teeth to get stronger.
