  • “We got our idea from concession [stands]. We were just eating and then we were like ‘what are we gonna do for the Cardboard Challenge?’ and then Jazmin said ‘A vending Machine!'” Rylee Sherwood said as she and her friend, Jazmin Nickerson stand by their functional cardboard vending machine

  • “I was looking online for ideas when I saw an I-pod and I’ve been really wanting an I-pod [so] I decided to do it.” says fourth grader, Mary Alice

  • “I have two didgeridoos at my house I wanted to try and [make a] didgeridoo,” says fourth grader Nick D’onofrio

  • “I’m part of this Star Wars thing called the Mandaloroians and I really like R2-D2 so I built one! My dad helped me cut out the pieces and I got to glue everything together… My favorite color is pink and I wanted it to be not the original R2, I wanted it to be unique.” says third grader, Trinity Holm

  • “My mom found an article last year that said dogs get really depressed when kids go back to school and I didn’t want my dog to be depressed so I made a dog treat dispenser.” says fourth grader, Reina Crowley.

  • “It is a regular skiball machine…I kind of like ski ball and my last name is Bird so I called it Bird Ball.” says third grader, Regan Bird.

  • “I decided to make a popcorn machine. I really like carnivals and I love popcorn so I decided to make a popcorn machine.” says fifth grader, Karis Skinner.

  • “Since I like Legos I decided to make Lego costumes.” Says fifth grader, Jasmin Barrios.

  • “We both like the same tv show called Dog With A Blog and we were watching it together and we saw them make a little lemonade stand so we made this.” says Neli Qudenan while serving lemonade next to her best friend Sarah Lloyd.

  • “So first me and my mom thought of an idea [on how to] make it. First I drew all of the prints of the bike. Next we made the structure of the attachments. We used tubes then attached them together.” says second grader, Norris Sun as he smiles next to his cardboard bike.

  • “[My project is] the TARDIS from Doctor Who. I tried to convince my mom to make it eight feet tall and she said ‘You’re going to put that in your room, and it’s gong to break.'” Laughs the Doctor, seventh grader Leily Nguyen as she stands next to her home made TARDIS.

  • The cardboard cashier, seventh grader, Rheylynn Loyd stands by her detailed project.

  • “It is a greenhouse and it’s completely recyclable. This saran wrap, it doesn’t say it on the box, but it’s is recyclable it’s just not recycleable at home but there are special drop off places that, if you clean out all of the food, you can drop it off.” says sixth grader, Riley Hawkes.

  • “I made basically a tilt-a-maze . It’s a maze that we tilt around on a rotator and try to get [the ball] our of the maze. We have half a tennis ball in the bottom and it’s a pyramid at the top so [it’s] half the tennis ball on top of that pyramid that allows it to remain on point.” says seventh grader, Kyle Mathy

  • The crowd of people hurry to find a seat as they are excited to see who this year’s winners are.

  • Contestants sit and wait, eager to hear their names called.

  • Superintendent Dr. Harry Bull shakes the hand of Joshua Hojnowski to congratulate him on being one of this year’s 2015 Cardboard Box Challenge.

  • “I choose projects that I think are good projects and I narrow it down to the five best and then I pick one. My mom helped me with the hot glue gun so I don’t burn my fingers.” says fifth grader, Carsen Conklin as he sits next to his prize and his cardboard mine.
