Bob Dylan’s new album Shadows in the Night, was released on Tuesday Feb. 3. It has definitely made it clear who his target audience is. His songs are good, the music is nice and slow, somehow sad and comforting at the same time.

One song in particular, Full Moon and Empty Arms, really displays how nice and yet sad his songs are, it is slow and calming, but at the same time, even just the title sounds sad, and with lyrics like “and next full moon… If my one wish comes true, my empty arms will be filled with you.” The sounds of his voice make the listener feel content, but listening to the words will also make you slightly upset, and may even bring back old memories.

Bob has chosen ten songs from  The Great American Songbook and has brought them to our ears. He brings the past back into the now and makes people think back to “the good old days” and causes the “youngins” to think about the past, if they decided to listen, and realize that not all “old music” is bad. With his sweet voice and soft guitar, Bob Dylan makes people remember what they loved about the music of the 1900s

Although very beautiful and pleasing, it does not seem like it would appeal very much to today’s younger generation, and really aims more towards the people of the 1950’s, so teenagers might not enjoy it as much. People can definitely see that this is his main goal, which is a good one. It is nice to go back to the classics every once in a while, and this album really takes people back.

In the end, his music is sweet and beautifully sad, and it will even make you think about your own self as a person. Overall, I would give it a four out of five stars.
