Library Lockers to Become Next Art Installation

Resident art instructor, Gayle Brown, as well as an estimated 60 hand-picked volunteers will be working hard to turn the lockers just outside the library into book spines starting May 31 and the project is projected to end June 3.LibraryLockers

Brown will be using laser cut stencils to create recognizable titles along the lockers, such as Animal Farm and The Catcher in the Rye.

“I think it is important to have art anywhere in the building,” Brown said. “I think this will be a great way to add a ton of color and visual interest to one of the most passed-by locations in Smoky Hill.”

Brown was inspired by a similar project done in Mississippi by a group of teachers. She has since sent out an email to other staff members looking for other volunteers, stating that “Much of the project does not require any ‘artistic talent’…merely the ability to follow directions and be willing to get dirty.”

The installation will be located in the area surrounding the library, and should offer a way to peak interest in the students as well as visiting parents and staff.
“It’s visible from many locations; upstairs, downstairs. It’s a great spot and we are hoping that it will be the first installation of many.”
