Juniors Opinions on Standardized Testing

Pressure, pressure, pressure, that’s a lot of pressure from a test that determines if student’s can get into college.

With the ACT around the corner, there is a lot of pressure on juniors to do well so they can get into a good college.

However, not a lot of Juniors agree with their purpose.

“The only good thing would probably [be] for the school to show like improvement on how we take test, but I don’t think it measures how smart we are,” junior Bella Hill said.

“It [Standardized Test] is a very messed up way to generate revenue into taking advantage of us,” junior Ryan Alles said. I opted out [of CMAS]. The only one I’m taking is the ACT because that actually matters for college.”

According to Frontline.com, advocates say that schools should be rewarded financially for performing well on standardized tests, and that providing such incentives will motivate school leaders and teachers to teach effectively and raise student performance.

Standardized tests have been getting a really bad reputation for being long and unfair however, not all students agree with that.

““It helps the school evaluate how far you’ve gotten and the questions aren’t always that hard,” junior Kennedy Grasse said.

“[The only time I don’t like it is] when you haven’t learned how to do it[ the problems] yet,” Grasse said.

Student’s ACT test scores aren’t the only thing that determines whether or not they get into college. It’s a balance.

The higher a student’s GPA is, the lower they can afford to do on the test and vice versa. [See attached charts of Colorado schools and GPA chart for more information.]

“I have to get a 23,” Hill, who hopes to go college, said.

Hill says that she used Method Test Prep; an online resource to help high school students get prepared for ACT’s and SAT’s.
