Students who stand out in their sports

Smoky Hill offers a variety of sports and students who excel at their sports can become Athlete of the Month. Every month the students who perform outstandingly will get notified as the Athlete of the Month. The Athletes of the Month are awarded with their picture taken and a free Jimmy John’s sub sandwich.

Nathan Abebe was awarded as Athlete of the Month for tennis. “I was very excited, but honestly was unexpected,” Nathan said.

Not just anyone can be Athlete of the Month though, it takes a lot of time and effort that you put in, in and out of school. “I trained 6 times a week outside of school for the sport I’m dedicated to” Nathan said.

Some people like to pursue their athletic dreams and go further than just high school. “ I plan on playing college tennis, and hopefully go professional” Nathan said.

Some athletes can get inspired by something or someone. An inspiration can motivate you to pursue something very passionately. “ My inspiration is my dad. He started training me at six years old, and since then I have grown really passionate for the sport” Nathan said.

The athletes that have been awarded this have been working hard to get far in their sport, such as getting fourth place at regionals for tennis. So becoming an athlete of the month is not an easy task, but with the right amount of work anyone can do it.
