When In Rome

The Latin club took a trip to Rome over fall break.

During Fall Break, some people relax, some catch up on school, and others go to Rome with the Latin Club.

The students who went to Rome were able to go because they are a part of the Smoky Hill Latin club. Senior Sarah Elizabeth said, “It was to really get to know the culture and rather than just learn about it, actually see it for ourselves.”

She also said that Latin history is not only part of its own history, but American history, too. They were able to compare and contrast the differences between American culture and theirs. Elizabeth said the trip exceeded her expectations, considering she had never been out of the country before.

“I had taken Latin for three years, but I actually couldn’t fit [Roman Class] in my schedule this year. But every year we learned about old customs and Roman government and how the language itself reflects in the culture,” Elizabeth said.

Mary Zang, the Latin teacher, believes Ancient Rome is one of the most important parts of history in general. “We went to Rome for exposure to the classic world and to see the effect that ancient society has on modern society today.” Zang said.
