Traffic Dodging

Is it really worth the risk?

Recently, Smoky Hill has implemented a pair of crossing guards to monitor students during the morning crossing. At first I felt like I had been kicked back into kindergarten, but after seeing a student get hit by a car this morning, I finally understood why.

A student crossing the street yesterday morning was hit by a car turning right. Thankfully no one was injured.

It does go to show, however, how inconsiderate a lot of this student body is. Apparently, it is too much of a hassle to wait a minute to cross safely to the other side of the street. Instead, we must put our lives and potentially other’s lives at risk so we can get to 7-11 faster or go puff on a cigarette on a corner.

These actions don’t just affect the impatient; they also affect the unsuspecting driver who was either dropping her own kids off at school or just trying to get to work. I bet she was terrified for the rest of her morning commute.

There have been other cases of this kind. One of the most recent cases occurred 2 or 3 years ago, when a student named Jesse was hit and seriously injured in a similar instance.

Is it really so hard to wait to cross the street? No. Let’s not be stupid.

The SmokyNow staff agrees with this 25-0.
