The New Medina Alert Expansion

The Medina Alert is now statewide

On Tuesday, Gov. John Hickenlooper signed a bill that established the Medina Alert System as a statewide law.

The Medina Alert is named for Jose Medina, who was working as a valet outside a nightclub just blocks from the Capitol building when he was killed in a hit and run in January 2011. He was 21 years old. The system provides details on hit and run suspects, almost like an Amber Alert. This involves quickly alerting the media and posting bulletins on the electronic highway signs. These describe the appearance of the suspect and the car he/she is in.

The system, which was recently only in Denver, has been used approximately 17 times and led to 13 arrests.

Because of this bill, these alerts can be sent to millions versus just the city of Denver.
