Smoky Hill is presenting a version of The Crucible, a popular play written by Arthur Miller, on Fri. November 21 and Sat. November 22 at 7:15 p.m.IMG_0001(1)

‘ The Crucible’ is set in 1600’s Salem and showcases the witch hunts that took place. It starts with a Barbados woman, Tituba, stirring a mysterious mixture in a pot. About 12 girls come running in and dance. Someone, however, catches them in the act and Betty, a young girl, falls into a coma-like state. Rumors of witchcraft circle around the village. People are hung, pressed, and accused of witchcraft.

Senior, Sydne Baca, is acting in the play and is excited for opening day. “We worked so hard on it,” Baca said. “To have it finally shown to the world is exciting.”

This group has been working on it for about six weeks, and Baca believes they are all ready for opening night. “We are very well prepared,” Baca said. “It [rehearsal] does not go smoothly. It is very rough and there is a lot of drama, but you got to get over it.” Baca said.

This play is not like other productions Smoky has produced. It is more intense and serious. “From what I have seen Smoky Hill do, it is always either a romantic comedy or a plain comedy,” Baca said. “ It’s never been something like this.”

In fact, Baca’s favorite scene is in the courthouse when girls are possesed. The play includes intense scenes, some profanity, violence, and suggestive language. Because of this, it may not be appropriate for children.
