A South Carolina student at Chesnee High School got into a dispute with the school’s administration as she was suspended for wearing a shirt that stated “Nobody Knows I’m A Lesbian.”
Senior, Briana Popour said that she had ultimately come out as a lesbian, and states that she had worn the shirt before and had never received any problems or comments about it.
The Chesnee High School handbook states that clothing that is “distracting, revealing, overly suggestive or otherwise disruptive,” is not tolerated. From that observation, Popour mentions that the student handbook does not restrict any form of sexual status or being. In response a high ranking administrator said “well, not everything is in the handbook,”

Popour is working towards freedom of expression and was told the she either change the shirt or go home.

Sophomore Madelynn wood is bisexual and supports Popour, “I think that if this is how she wanted to express herself then that’s okay,” Wood said.

“Isn’t that what school is supposed to teach you? To be happy with who you are? Maybe people will be more comfortable showing who they are because you should be able to wear what you want to wear,” Popour said.

The handbook states that any clothing that is distracting is not prohibited, but “if people have that much of problem with a shirt then I don’t know how they are going to focus in school,” Wood said.

Popour hasn’t been back to school yet, and states that she will not be changing her wardrobe. “She should keep wearing it [the shirt,]” Wood said.
