Ahmed Mohamed, a 14 year old student living in Irving, TX, got arrested Sep. 14, after bringing a homemade clock to show his teacher, who mistook his creation for a bomb. The Sudanese boy’s story went viral, and covered the news and online websites. Mohamed’s unfortunate incident led him to the White House as the president of the United States, Obama, tweeted “Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.”

Mohamed’s broke the silence with a tweet saying “Thank you for your support! I really didn’t think people would care about a Muslim boy. #Thankyouforstandingwithme #IStandWithAhmed.” As the hashtag, #IStandWithAhmed began to trend, news icons such as Hillary Clinton and Mark Zuckerberg showed their gratitude and praise to Mohamed.

“I thought it was racist, and that people shouldn’t judge people by their race, because I’m pretty sure that the only reason he got arrested was because of his race” senior Claudia Contreras said.

“ [the teacher should have] definitely not called the cops,” said senior Alonzo Branch. “With all the things that we have done to make sure that an actual bomb doesn’t come into place, I guess you could see why that was the train of thought, but I don’t think that it was really in the teacher’s authority to call the cops on the kid. The teacher needs to apologize.”

“[The teacher] should have asked him what it was before accusing him of making a bomb,” Conreras said.

It is our natural human instincts to be curious of situations and to protect ourselves from certain situations and events, as we don’t want to be the next face on the news or the milk carton.

“I would have been curious, but wouldn’t have thought it was a bomb, I would have asked him about it first,” Conreras said.
