Songs in the halls

Why Choir was singing in front of the Lecture Center

Today some people might have been wondering why the choir was practicing in front of the Lecture Center. Well, it is because they have an upcoming performance.

“We were getting ready for our Major Works concert, which is at Bethany Lutheran Church on March 23,” James Techau, Smoky Hill choir director, said. “That’s definitely the most special performance we do all year off campus.”

The reason that they were in the hallway was for technical purposes.

“So, singing in the hallway, it just allows us to just get a little bit of performance practice, prior to the concert,” Techau said.

Each Choir group performing will be doing a different set of songs.

“Advanced Women’s choir will be performing four poems, written by poet May Swenson. Men’s choir will be singing a collection of three Russian folk songs,” Techau said. “While Symphonic choir will be singing a set of seven poems written by Robert Frost.”

One of the songs that Advanced Women’s choir will be singing is “named was ‘Changeless’,” Techau said. “It’s about kind of asking the question, kind of the search for God, and when they called Him different things … It is all about this idea of man’s search for something greater than just us.”

While the song from the video above, which is sung by Symphonic choir, takes a slightly different path.

“The name of the song is “‘Soon Ah Will Be Done.’ This piece was written in the spirit of the African American Spiritual and sings about the day that I will be done with the troubles of the world … goin’ home to live with God.” Techau said.
