Pandora or Youtube?

The Pandora website has been blocked, but YouTube is now available to students.

According to Tim Smil, we only have a certain amount of bandwidth, and Pandora which plays continuously, takes up a lot of bandwidth, whereas YouTube is just one video and takes up a smaller amount. Bandwidth is the amount of wifi usage we have available to the school.

Bjorn Hanson, the technology coordinator, sent out an email to the staff. “Recently you may have noticed difficulty getting some Internet sites. Due to increased Internet demand, thousands of new devices and increased online testing in the district, we have experienced usage that exceeds our current bandwidth,” the email stated.

We only get a certain amount of bandwidth and Pandora and many other sites took up a large portion of it, such as iHeartradio and other music streaming sites.

Many students have been putting in complaints because Pandora is blocked. Ashley Mitsch, sophomore at Smoky Hill was one of these people. “I’d rather listen to music than watch silly videos all day.”

Mitsch claims that she listened to Pandora everyday on her free time. The technology coordinators are going to continue to find more ways to shorten our bandwidth usage.
