Opinion: Donald Trump on Twitter
Donald Trump’s Twitter status may change under Elon Musk.
May 16, 2022
By now, it is a well-known fact that billionaire CEO, Engineer, and space exploration enthusiast Elon Musk has acquired Twitter. The buyout of the social media platform on April 14 cost Musk $43 billion.
Since the acquisition, Musk has been open about his intention to make the platform a safe haven for free speech. This is a move that combats the censorship that frequently takes place on the app.
Musk has also said that he would allow former President Donald Trump back on the platform. He has stated that he believes that perma-bans should no longer be allowed, including the ban placed on the 45th president.
Trump had remarked that he will not be returning to Twitter in an effort to boost his own site, Truth Social.
Trump also hasn’t been shy about his intentions to run for the presidency in 2024. In modern elections, it is imperative for candidates to stay active on social media sites in order to spread their message and respond to their voters. This is no different in the case of a Donald Trump 2024 run for office.
If Trump runs in 2024, he should return to Twitter – especially if he wins. Posting only to a right-wing media platform when running for office is not an effective strategy to inform the entirety of the public on what your plans and ideas are.
When used properly, Twitter is a great tool for political leaders, even controversial ones. In the case of a Twitter return, Trump will need to be smarter about what and when he posts. The unprofessional nature of his tweets became famous throughout his time in office. So famous in fact that Twitter banned the sitting president months before he left office.
Joe Biden’s “POTUS” Twitter page follows a professional format with thoughts and ideas that are more organized. His Tweets do contain biases and personal opinions as Trumps did, however they are more subtle and less alarming in nature.
The Donald Trump Twitter era was entertaining, there’s no denying that, however a more formal approach to the app would be necessary for him in the event of a return. The president of the United States or even a presidential candidate should not be tweeting simply to humor themselves or to prompt a reaction from the media.
In the case that Trump does not run in 2024, his Twitter status is less meaningful. There would be no essential reason from him to return although if he did he would still have great political push.
