Opinion | American Healthcare is a Scam

The growing issue of healthcare circling America

Gloria Namgung, Editor-in-Chief

American healthcare is a scam. All residents in the United States should NOT have to stress about the costs and debt that come with access to healthcare.

One thing America is notorious for is the enormous costs that come with paying for healthcare. The word “universal” is nonexistent when this issue is being discussed of.

“Health care debt is a burden for a large share of Americans,” said Alex Montero in Americans’ Challenges with Health Care Costs

Why do Americans have a growing phobia of the bills they would have to pay instead of the sickness they need to treat? This dilemma needs to be resolved by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that are responsible for healthcare.

Due to many Americans’ reluctance to have ownership of healthcare, not having health insurance in America is not all that shocking.

“About four in ten U.S. adults say they have delayed or gone without medical care in the last year due to cost, with dental services being the most common type of care adults report putting off due to cost,” said Audrey Kearney in Americans’ Challenges with Health Care Costs.

This is a bigger issue than just skipping a dentist appointment a couple of times. This growing issue of convincing oneself that healthcare is “unnecessary” is becoming a bad habit. There are some sicknesses that just can’t be treated by the concern of the number of digits on a hospital bill.

Evidently, the U.S. isn’t the only nation with healthcare. Countries like Canada design their healthcare programs to put people and not profits, first.

“In Canada, the healthcare system is funded by income, sales and corporate taxes, that, combined, are much lower than what Americans pay in premiums,” said Ralph Nader in 21 Ways the Canadian Healthcare System is Better than Obamacare.

Canada makes it so that any citizen or permanent resident that lives in each province and territory can apply for public healthcare. The Canadian healthcare system is organized in a way that ensures access to the highest standard of care for all of its citizens, as it should be.

The United States Department of Health and Human Services needs to do a service to every American and permanent resident by making healthcare more affordable so that it’s more accessible. With this adjustment, Americans will not have to live in the misery of being in debt for the rest of their lives.
