Boys from Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, CA recently held a “draft” similar to that of the NFL to pick their dates to their June Prom. Around 40 boys in all participated in this. These students rented a venue, dressed up in sports coats and put themselves on a two-minute clock to select a date.

The event was criticized by the school adminstration and principal, who later urged parents to talk to their students about the “seriousness of this type of activity.” Various people on Twitter and Facebook have described this as ” an outrage”, “demeaning”, “awkward”, and “sexist.” However some support has been shown as various students from different schools call this “amazing” and “imaginative.”

The students said the draft took place at two different venues, one for seniors, one for juniors. The seniors used a numbered ball roller to determine their pick in the draft, while juniors drew pieces of paper containing numbers. The young girls who attended when then ranked and not many have yet been asked out to the prom.

While the students involved in the draft maintained that no money was exchanged, various students have claimed that money did pass hands and a district attorney is investigating this case.

Their names have not been released because the students could face disciplinary actions and most of them are minors.
