Meaning behind “Wish Week”

Make-A-Wish changes lives

Nafees Abidi, Staffer

Could you imagine yourself or someone you love battling with intestinal failure and heart complications, and taking medications everyday to just survive? Anadylan (5) is living in Aurora, and goes through this everyday. She has a wish to go to Disneyland, and Smoky Hill will work with Make-A-Wish to be Anadylans “fairy” and grant her wish. Every year, when Smoky does this I see our school unite as one to help someone in need. Participation in these activities makes me believe that our school will leave a footprint in history.

Students and staff unite as Wish Week strikes again. Every year, Smoky works with Make-A-Wish Foundation to grant a toddler’s wish who is battling with their health. There are many events taking place throughout the week to raise money for Make-A-Wish. Every year, I try participating in all the activities to make sure more than enough money is raised for a young kid’s wish to come true. Wish Week also helps me get closer to my teachers and create a bond with the school. wish week 1

The Make-A-Wish Foundation believes wishes make life better for kids with life threatening medical conditions. This foundation started when Chris (7) was diagnosed with leukemia. He had always wished to be a police officer, and the kind people in his community granted his wish; this then set in motion a wonderful charity. Make-A-Wish serves a unique – and vital – role in helping strengthen and empower children battling life-threatening medical conditions. When I hear stories like these, I imagine how much our school makes an impact on a child’s life every year. Being involved in Wish Week is important not only to our community, but also in empowering students and staff to do something better and make a change in the world.

“I see such a change, I guess i’m one of the only ones who remeber the lack of school participation these was,” Sponsor for Student Government who introduced Make-A-Wish to Smoky Scott Cohen said. “Now I feel like we have more at the Winter Dance then Homecoming because they get to see Anadylan.”
