The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Danforth Emily M. Danforth:
About the book: Cameron Poste is a 12-year-old whose parents have died at the beginning book and she is sent to live with her conservative aunt. After her Aunt comes to realize Cam’s sexuality, she sends her to Promise, a camp to teach Cam about gender roles. The Miseducation of Cameron Post is a coming-of-age teen novel written by by Emily M. Danforth
Why it was banned: Cape Henlopen a high school in Lewes, Delaware removed this book from the summer reading list because of inappropriate language
Sixth Grade Can Really Kill You by Barthe DeClements:
About the book: Helen is a skilled basketball player who is in the sixth grade and has reading problems. After a while, she is switched to another sixth grade class and with the help of her teacher, she then enters the special education class. With hard work along with support from her friends, teachers and parents, she improves her reading. Sixth Grade Can Really Kill You is written by Barthe DeClements.
Why it was challenged: A elementary school students parent in Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan, Minnesota challenged the school libraries because the “r-word” is said in the book.
Hop On Pop: The Simplest Seuss for Youngest Use by Dr. Seuss:
About the book: Hop On the Pop is a children’s picture book by Dr. Seuss for early beginning readers.
Why it was challenged: Challenged in Toronto, Canada because someone was concerned that the book, “encourages children to use violence against their fathers.” (taken from the source)
An Abundance of Katherines by John Green:
About the book: An Abundance of Katherines is a young adult novel written by John Green. Colin Singleton is a child prodigy who has dated 19 girls by the name of ‘Katherine.’ After his high school graduation, Colin goes on a road trip with his friend, Hassan Harbish and meets Lindsay Lee Wells at the supposed Archduke Franz Ferdinand resting place. They are soon employed by Lindsay’s mom at a local factory producing tampons, and meet her boyfriend, Colin. Colin believes that he has found the ‘eureka’ moment he has been looking for.
Why it was challenged: Suspended from a Texas school by the superintendent. According to the Breitbart News Network. com, parents found the themes of the book “objectionable” which including sexuality, rape, abortion, vulgar language, alcoholism, mental illness, and incest. However, after the book was suspended the superintendent reinstated it because of the nationwide controversy. Last year in February 2015, the school district set policy changes on books are chosen and how to handle parents objections.
The Fault in our Stars by John Green:
About the book: Hazel Grace Lancaster is a 16-years-old girl who has thyroid cancer. She meets Augustus Waters who has osteosarcoma, at a cancer support group. Augustus’ cancer is in remission but he has lost his leg because of his cancer. After some time, they become close friends and eventually, fall in love. The Fault in our Stars is another young adult novel written by John Green.
Why it was banned: Removed on two separate occasions. The first time was at Frank Augustus Miller Middle School in Rancho Cucamonga, California because of cancer, sex, and language are mentioned in the book. The second time was in Riverside, California in Unified School District after a parent complained that hazel and Gus’ love story was not appropriate
