Just Five More Minutes, Mom!

Should school actually start later than scheduled?

Some people know that students complain about how early they have to wake up to go to school. They either spend most of the morning talking about it or end up being late for their classes. But lately this hasn’t just been talk between students. There have even been multiple kinds of ideas about whether or not school should start later. In my opinion, especially as a student, I think school should start late.

Everyone has their different sleep patterns. In recent research I did in our latest sleep issue for NEXT, usually in teens their sleep patterns cause them to not go to sleep until at least 11 p.m. Then we have to wake up early to make it to school on time at 7:10 a.m. Throughout all of the homework and clubs after school, students are busy enough for it to result in us staying awake longer than recommended.

According to NPR.org, “The American Academy of Pediatrics issued a policy statement calling on school districts to move start times to 8:30 a.m. or later for middle and high schools, so that students can get at least 8 1/2 hours of sleep a night.” In all honesty, I think it would be very difficult to find a student who didn’t agree with this statement.

I think this would be a great idea. Being able to get a full night’s sleep before going to learn things almost all day, especially for students who have AP classes, would definitely help out with the way we could retain information and actually pay attention in class. Without knowing if school would have to end at a later time, this doesn’t change the view on things. Having school start at a later time would help a lot of students get the sleep that they deserve. Starting school around 8:30 a.m would not be the worst idea in the world.
