Gay Straight Alliance

A Safe Place

Ivory Brallier, Staffer

The gsaGay Straight Alliance club is a “Safe space… social support network” Cathy Keller, one of the two supervisors of the GSA club, said. Keller started to supervise the club every green Tuesday, while her counterpart, Stephen Fernandes, runs it every red Tuesday.

Cathy feels that “its an important thing to do, because when I was in high school, no body was out of the closet, because that was just not done, I mean nobody,” Keller said. Cathy supports the ideals that the club stands for: being who you are and not being afraid to stand up for yourself.

“I just think that it’s amazing that in my lifetime that things have changed enough that people can be more open,” Cathy said. She started to do supervise GSA because Mr. Fernandez was working part time and he needed someone to do green days. But it has affected her life a little more than just being at the club.

“Its made me a little more… conscious about paying attention, I mean i guess I was already pretty politically aware, but just sort of paying attention to discussion topics or things that we might want to talk about. And its just kind put on my radar like, different ways that I deal with my own kids, and just being more conscious of events happening around us,” Cathy said.
