Being on Varsity for any sport or team can be an honor for which players deserves recognition. Players will be placed on a certain team based on their level of skill and sometimes with the exception of the grade the student is in (junior or senior). Freshman would have to really prove their worth in sports that require a large amount of  skill or a different level of skill. “I feel like I did well, but I could have done better. I felt like I was too nervous going up to bat and I should have been more confident,” McDermott said.

Freshmen Daniel McDermott, and Israel Rodriguez have worked hard to play in a few games for Smoky Hill’s varsity baseball team as freshman. McDermott and Rodriguez explained that they did not play on the field as much, but they were designated hitters, also known as DH. “During most of the games I played DH. When I wasn’t  in the game, I would just support my teammates and hope for the best,” McDermott said.

Rodriguez explained that it was exciting to be on varsity not only for the experience, but also the idea of having the ability to say that he was on varsity as a freshman. “I am glad that I could say that I got to wear the varsity jersey,” Rodriguez said.

People will sometimes feel that what they do or did is enough, but for McDermott and Rodriguez enough is never enough. Both student athletes strive to be better players on the field so that they always have something to bring to the field. “It feels good to make varsity, but I have to keep working hard so that next year I can be more successful,” McDermott said.

“My goals for next year is to improve everything because there is no way that you can say that you are good enough to play baseball and stop,” Rodriguez said.
