Exercise Your Brain Over the Summer by Reading

Students required to read over the summer

Mona Jabr, Staffer

Every year, Smoky Hill High School requires students to read a book over summer. According to a post on http://smokyhill.cherrycreekschools.org, Smoky Hill High School believes in the importance of summer reading to ensure the success of all its students.

“The best predictor of summer loss or summer gain is whether or not a child reads during the summer,” www.scholastic.com stated.Summer reading loss refers to the decline in children’s reading development that can occur during summer vacation times when children are away frIMG_9952om the classroom and not participating in formal literacy programs (Allington & McGill-Franzen, 2003).

Every student at Smoky Hill will be referred to 5 different books for each grade level; therefore, the student can choose from the different books based off of their own likings.

In the beginning of the school year, each student will work on a project, a test, or an essay chosen by the teacher. The students are responsible for getting the book themselves and reading it.
