According to The Denver Post, Colorado and federal agents and prosecutors announced on Wednesday that a huge international drug and money laundering resulted in the seizure of 273 pounds of heroin with a street value of $40 million,

“That is a lot of drugs,” sophomore Hira Davis said. “It’s hard to believe that this happen in Colorado. I never hear about drug smuggling here.”

According to Rob Saccone, a DEA strike force agent, brown heroin was being smuggled into Colorado in large quantities and sold on the 16th Street Mall and in City Park. Brown heroin can be smoked or snorted, and it is relatively cheap. It was sold for $10 to $20.

“I go to 16th street all the time with my family,” sophomore Batina Jamboni said. “This is very uncomfortable and disturbing to hear.”

According to Cynthia Coffman a Colorado Attorney General the use of heroin in Colorado have increased over the years. “This bust deals a knockout punch to a highly-organized and invasive bunch of traffickers.,” Coffman said in a statement.

Search warrants were served on the May 14 and 24 suspects were arrested. Other search warrants were served in Arizona, Nevada, Utah and California.

According to U.S. Attorney John Walsh the alleged leaders where a father and son duo from Mexico. They have been identified but not yet arrested. The authorities are looking for them and expect them to be tracked down, arrested, and extradited to Colorado to face their charges.
