This year Smoky Hill will be having our homecoming celebration the week of Sept. 11. There has been no changes in the events that we do during homecoming week, however, the actual day that we play our homecoming football game is moved to the saturday before homecoming week compared to the friday of homecoming week in previous years.

This years change in the date we are doing the homecoming game is based solely on the fact that our activities director Scott Cohen does not want to be taking anything away from the students at our school.

According to Cohen, one of the biggest reasons we have changed the game to being the weekend before is because this year our football team has Four homecoming games instead of Six like we had last year. This change really limits the amount of games we have to choose from during this upcoming season.

The four games instead of six affects everyone because the weeks we have home games are August 26th, September 9th, September 23rd, and October 26th.

The reason that August 26th was decided against for our homecoming week, is because that would give everyone one week of school then homecoming which is really early and for most would be a little too early cohen said.

September 9th is the day that the game was picked, but that week wasn’t chosen because it is a four day week which would force him to take out one of the things we do traditionally every homecoming week which would in return take away from us as students at the school Cohen said.

September 23rd was not chosen because it’s a district week in which some nights you aren’t allowed to do any events which again would take an experience away from the students and that is what Cohen was trying to make sure that he didn’t do. And October 26th wasn’t chosen because it’s in the middle of fall break which wouldn’t work for obvious reasons.

So essentially choosing the 9th of September as our homecoming game was the best option because by doing that we get a full homecoming week and the best chance to enjoy and participate in it. So instead of finishing homecoming week we are kicking homecoming week with football and a three day weekend.
