The Danger of Genetic Makeup

Genetic makeup is a liability to our society and shouldn’t even be considered

A recent movie we had been required to watch in my AP Literature class, Gattaca, had turned out to be more thought provoking than initially expected. We had been allocated a set of information and a movie to watch, and later encouraged to take our own stance. Gattaca, had dealt with a not- too-distant future where parents are able to choose their offspring’s precise genetic makeup.

The advancement of Science in the last century is almost staggering, we have now reached a time where almost nothing seems impossible. The biggest issue faced when deciding whether a technique or practice is morally acceptable is the notion that moral and ethical values differ from person to person.

In times of great advancement, somewhere along the line we must stop and ask ourselves where the line of ethics is. Just because we can do certain things, does not mean they are morally correct or that we ought to do them.

The cloning and editing of genes is an act of heresy. Man should not interfere with god’s work nor their fate. Not only does the editing of genes and cloning inferior with god’s work, but can lead to the insularity of thought and practice in terms of what the “perfect” skintone, body type, or hair color is.

The practice is a liability and a detriment to not only our society, but a discourteous act towards our great lord.

Great hair, well mannered, honest, loyal, tall, educated, handsome/beautiful, any parent’s dream child.. Creating your own baby may seem like an inimitable gift, but one must remember that all that glitters is not gold.

This specious practice can lead to great dangers in our society. There is so much potential for abuse and misuse. We wouldn’t be able to handle the consequences if any large mistakes occur as the event would be too catastrophic to even fix
