President Obama proposes two free years of community college

FullSizeRender Today, Thursday, Jan. 8, President Barack Obama announced a proposal to provide two years of free community college tuition to American students who can maintain good grades.

According to time.com  President Obama videotaped his new porposal while aborad  Air Force One,which was later posted to Facebook. President Obama plans to make a speech about his proposal at Pellissippi Community College in Tennessee on Friday.

According to politico.com, “Beginning this year, any state high school graduate is eligible for two years of free community college tuition under the Tennessee Promise.”

According to ABC.com if all of the 50 states participate in the porposal, it would help over 9 million students who are tyring to get a college education. In the proposal, students who participate must hold a C or higher and maintain a good grade point average. Students must be making steady progress towards their degree while doing so.

All the participating schools must change some of their curriculum in order to meet the requirements of the new proposal. Federal funding will cover three quarters of the average costs students have to pay for community college. If the proposal goes through, then states will pay for the other quarter.

Some of the other funding details the President wants to use in the proposal will come out at a later date along with his funding budget. According to USA Today.com “ The proposal is what is going to make community college as universal as high school is already.”
