With the Broncos headed to Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, students have been pulling out their Payton Manning, number 18, jerseys to show their Bronco spirit at schools. However, the Weld County district has banned students from wearing Peyton Manning’s 18 jersey.

The district’s dress code does not allow students to wear certain numbers on their clothing. According to thedenverchannel.com the reason that students cannot wear certain numbers, like number 18, is because the numbers are gang related. The school district does not want students to be affiliated or approached by gang that could put that student in danger.

“I think that it’s a very smart thing to do, because then the school system is keeping them safe from any potential problems that could occur if students were to get mistaken for part of a gang,” senior Claudia Contreras said.

The district is banning these numbers in hopes that it will help lower gang activity at the district’s schools. Other numbers that students are not allowed to wear are 13, 14, 41, and 81. This ban on numbers has been in the district’s dress code policy for over four years, starting in 2011. There was no fight back when the ban was put into place. There was also no problem when Peyton Manning signed with the Broncos back in 2012 after playing with the Indianapolis Colts for 14 seasons.

“It’s too bad that the students can’t wear their Manning jerseys,” Contreras said. “ Especially with the Super Bowl game this weekend.”

The district is not banning any other Bronco attire as long as the outfit fits within the district’s dress code.
