On Wednesday November 11, Smoky Hill is holding an annual Veterans Day Celebration, to honor and celebrate all people that have served in the U.S military.

According to va.gov, in November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day (now called Veterans Day) with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day, as Memorial Day is celebrated on May 30, in remembrance of those who died in active military service, and Veterans Day is celebrated to honor the U.S veterans that served in the military.

“My husband was a Veteran for twenty-three years,” Kelly Diblasi, post grad, said.

Smoky Hill is inviting all active duty personnels to participate in the Veterans Day celebration.

As listed on the Smoky Hill website, the highlights of the day will include; Military Vehicle Display – 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. in front of the school, presentation of the colors at 7:30 a.m. outside the lecture center, which will consist of The Hillside Regiment Band performing the National Anthem and a Presentation of colors and introduction of present veterans and active duty personnel. To top it off there will be Pancake breakfast for veterans and their families at 8:00 a.m. and a performance by the Smoky Hill choir.

“My husband is going to my grandsons school, they are doing a slideshow, and they invited him to come,” said Diblasi.

As Veterans Day is such an honorable day, many schools are taking part while honoring the Veterans.

Military uniforms and memorabilia will be displayed in front of the lecture center during the week of Veteran’s, according to Smoky Hill’s website.
