The Key Points from the State of the Union

President Joe Biden gave his first state of the Union this week, here are some of the key points in his speech and what it means.

Biden opened his speech with an acknowledgment of the current crisis within Ukraine. “He(Putin) thought he could roll into Ukraine and the world would roll over. Instead, he met with a wall of strength he never anticipated or imagined.” What this informs us of is that Biden wants to continue sanctions against Russian influence and to limit the power of the Russian state.

“In fact—our economy created over 6.5 million new jobs just last year, more jobs created in one year than ever before” There has been an increase in jobs in the past year and it may have been said to show that the economy is on a rise after the pandemic.

Biden also brought up the issue of lacking infrastructure within the U.S. “Now our infrastructure is ranked 13th in the world. We won’t be able to compete for the jobs of the 21st Century if we don’t fix that.”. This shows us that Biden wants the “Bipartisan Infrastructure Law” which will include a new focus on electric vehicles as well as traditional renovations.

Inflation also came up, with the intention to “Lower your costs, not your wages.” says Biden. However, this is in no way a solution and will not be a quick fix, this requires decisive and calculated decision-making to be effective.

Covid-19 is something that has slowly regressed out of many of our minds but is still omnipresent within our lives but now we have begun to see how the current situation is seen within our government. “With 75% of adult Americans fully vaccinated and hospitalizations down by 77%, most Americans can remove their masks, return to work, stay in the classroom, and move forward safely.”

A lot was said by Biden with a focus on Bipartisanship and a renewed focus on a more unilateral approach to government. This however is not what reality may be, these are the goals that Biden has while he is in office, but it remains to be seen if these goals will come to fruition at any point within his term.
