Technical Theater
What it takes to be head.
Technical theater is setting the scene for the Wizard of Oz musical, which will be performed on February 26 through the 28 at 7:15 p.m.. Those in technical theater will operate the lights, sound boards, construct scenery, operate camera equipment, and create special effects. Timothy Brown, a performing arts teacher in Smoky Hill High School described the class as being student run, and Brown’s goal is to put the students in a position where they have to become a leader-in terms of having a tech head, lights head, costumes head and stage managers whom of which is in control of everything.
“I select students based on their grades, leadership potential, commitment, and their responsibility level” said Brown.
Brown expressed that it is up to the leaders of the crews to manage their specific job such as: making the lights as good as they can be for that particular show is up to the lights head, as well as managing their time and crew. Brown will help to guide his students but he also gives them a lot of chance to fail and a lot of room to learn.
“I’m not going to be micromanaging, you know and part of the learning process is getting a lot of real world experience” said Brown.
