Swim Season Kick-Off

Girls’ swim team set to start soon

Girls swimming is just around the corner with the season beginning Nov. 13. The girls have been preparing for this season for months and the swim team has grown in size since last year. Because of this there will be two teams, J.V. and Varsity, which may increase the team’s chances of doing better than schools with bigger teams.

The team has four returning senior state qualifiers: Lizzie Wiley, Maddie Munns, Julia Song, and Gabby Antunez. With a 4th place finish in the Centennial league last year, the team hopes to move on to the state championships in 2014. “Now that I’m a sophmore I know what’s going on,” swimmer Riley Waller said. “I’m going to try to make it to state last year I was seconds away from making it to state. I’ve been going to all the morning practices and weight trainings so hopefully I’ll make it.”

To prepare for the season, the girls attend practices both before and after school for two hours each, Saturdays, and exercises in and out of the pool. “There is a good group of experienced kids coming back,” said coach Scott Cohen.

Senior Amy Oh is entering the season craving the competition. She has a set goal to get into invites. “Invites are when good swimmers get invited by coaches from different schools to compete against their best swimmers; it really will make me a better swimmer.” Oh added, “We have so many new swimmers that are really good and I’m pretty sure we’ll get a higher rating in state. Last year we were 11th.”
