The security office near the cafeteria is going to have a new electronic map, so anytime a door opens during the day a light will come on by the door. “So if at night somebody opens the door we will now know,” Bobby Erskine said.

Smoky Hill’s security system consist of security cameras and motion sensors all of which monitor each entrance of the school. “Any door you see, we are watching it” Erskine said

Security cameras can be useful in addressing and hinder violence and other misconduct as stated in an article by District Administration. “They (Smoky Hill security) can make sure that the door is not propped open all day when it’s suppose to be locked,” Erskine said.

Administrators considering the use of surveillance should only place cameras in common areas like a stair well and not where there is privacy expected. They should also notify the school community, by including statement in student handbooks and posting signs that surveillance cameras are located throughout the school building and anyone on school property may be videotaped, as stated in an article by District Administration. “We are doing all the doors of the school now so I’m tying them into the security system,” Erskine said.
