The Smoky Hill High School website stated that, during the 2015 legislative session, lawmakers passed the Senate Bill 15-223, which gives parents the right to exempt their students from taking the state standardized tests, Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS), Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), and the American College Testing (ACT), without any negative consequences to the student, teacher or school.

“Each local education provider must adopt a written policy that a parent may follow to excuse his or her student from taking the standardized assessment,” according to the Senate Bill 12-223.

Cherry Creek School District has created a form for parents to exempt their students from the state standardized tests, which can be found on the district’s website.

According to the Smoky Hill High School website, if you would like to exempt your student from the state standardized tests, they ask that you complete the form at least two weeks prior to testing so that the school can develop its assessment schedule.

The Senate Bill 15-223, only applies to the state mandated tests CMAS, PARCC, and the ACT. This Bill does not apply to other tests given in the classroom as part of the course work.
