IMG_2695Starting January 5, students will no longer be able to enter Smoky Hill high school through the doors on the north side of the building. The doors will be locked at all times.

According to an email sent to the entire SHHS community, in the past the doors were left open in the morning for student access, and they were open until first period started.

“This has to do with student safety. [This decision] came down from administration. It will be a good idea it just helps us basically funnel the kids in through [main entrance] and the [activities door],” security officer Todd McCorquodale said.

Teachers and Smoky Hill staff will still be able to go in from the north side, however the only way that they are allowed in is by using their key cards.

“This will cut down a lot of kids coming from other schools, and adults coming in the building, because we can’t monitor those doors at all times. It boils down to student safety and faculty safety” McCorquodale said.

While it is recommended that students just get dropped off in the south parking lot or the main entrance, students can walk around to the other doors when dropped off in the teacher parking lot.

An email has been sent to all of the SHHS community alerting them of the changes starting next semester.
