Just do Dress Code

Maybe Dress code isn’t so bad after all

dresscode(1)I was walking down the main hallway. Today was special, today was sports day. I saw students wearing Broncos shirts, basketball hats, and I even saw one kid dressed like the guy who serves concessions at baseball games. But as I was walking through the hall, I saw a fairly large group of girls wearing  tank tops, shoulder pads,  and shorts that barely covered their butts. Yes, they may be wearing shoulder pads, but the rest was highly unnecessary. I understand that it’s spirit week, but honestly, the dress code still stands, and it still needs to be followed.

At the beginning of each year, every student is given a handbook. This handbook has a full page dedicated to the dress code. This dress code clearly states the restrictions: “Inappropriately sheer, lace, tight, short, or low-cut clothing that bare or expose traditionally private parts of the body including, but not limited to, the stomach, shoulders, buttocks, upper thigh, back and breasts.” How much more direct can it get? The dress code doesn’t only stand for girls, but male students also. I can’t even count the amount of times a day I get to see the color of some guys boxers. The handbook clearly states, that sagging is not allowed.

I know that students expect more freedom in highschool, and that’s fair. We get to go off campus, we get to be in plays and clubs, and we even get to start driving. We are given so much more freedom, the least we could do is respect the few regulations that we are given. This might be hard for some students, so here is what we can do.

Make appropriate clothes a trend. Rather than considering someone cool for not following dress codes, make it a point to let that person know that it really doesn’t make a difference. Next time you see someone sagging their pants in the hall, make sure students let that person know people notice, but also make sure that that person knows that the whole school doesn’t need to know the color of their underwear. If we all make the dress code a trend, more and more people will begin to realize that maybe the dress code isn’t so terrible. It’s ok to take initiative. It’s ok to follow a few rules.
