Fashion and Design Club: A New Extra-Curricular Outlet for Students

Smoky Hill’s new Fashion and Design club will allow students to explore fashion in a safe and healthy manner.

The academic environment of the past school year has resulted in lower extra-curricular participation. The lack of normalcy has pushed students to find extra-curricular activities outside of the academic sphere, such as part-time jobs. The return of five days a week school may prompt students to be involved in school activities, such as the new Fashion and Design Club.

Founders Bithiah Negusu and Trisha Maroju both have a love of fashion.

“[We were] inspired to start this club because fashion has interested us all of our lives. From its history to accessories, every aspect of a good outfit has so much thought and intent,” Negusa said.

As they’re not alone in their admiration for fashion, creating a safe space for students interested in a variety of movements such as retro or androgynous looks was a must. Negusu and Maroju hope to incorporate an instruction aspect. Some of the goals the founders wish to achieve are giving members an outlet to experiment with fabrics, discuss the nuance of trends, and meet industry professionals.

Since the club is operating remotely, they’re able to reach a variety of students beyond the Smoky Hill community as well. However, the remote situation offers its fair share of obstacles. Creating community through a screen is difficult, regardless if the context is exponential equations or New York Fashion Week.

Negusu and Maroju are emphasizing club outreach.

“The majority of our membership so far has been found through our Instagram. We directly reach out to individuals who seem to have an interest in fashion and create meeting flyers that are consistently posted,” Marajou said.

Though the situation isn’t ideal, both club founders are committed to creating a fashion safe space at Smoky Hill.
