1 in 5 New Yorkers suffer from mental health disorders, in a recent article from Daily News it shows the how many New Yorkers are dealing with depression. According to this website,http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/teen-depression/index.shtml, depression is an illness that can affect your daily life. Untreated depression is a more intense feeling of sadness.
Depression makes you feel like you have no motivation, and you have trouble focusing. It can make it harder for you to get through the day.
“Depression made me feel like I didn’t have a life, like I didn’t want a life,” said freshman Breanna Hitt, someone who has dealt with depression.
It can make you feel undetermined, and you can have trouble concentrating. Depression also affects how you make decisions.
“Every time I went to school, everything around me felt like a blurr,” said Hitt. it affected her judgement and affected her routine life.
It made her feel suffocated, depression can make you feel lonely, even when you’re surrounded by many people.
Ordinary sadness or mood swings are not depression. Depression lasts much longer, you may function differently than normal and feel more anger and frustration. It can make you feel doubtful, and you can have trouble concentrating. Depression also affects how you make decisions.
“I had no friends at the time, so there was no one I could really talk too,” said Hitt, “I had no family to go home to either. The only person that made me feel loved was my grandma because she made me stay at her place when my mom family broke apart. She fed me, she said she loved me every night, and she made sure I had good hygiene. Other than her no one else was in my life that I could talk too.”
