Cons and Pros of Block Schedules

Is It Really Helping??

IMG_0508All across the U.S, schools are starting to bring the block schedule in and throwing the old schedule out. A block schedule consists of four or three 90 minute classes that a student will attend each day and six to seven classes all together. Some schools alternate the days so that the classes are on every other day. This schedule does have it pros and cons for both the students and teachers.

The pros of the schedule is teachers can help students more since they are seeing fewer students throughout their day. Students can work on more in class and ask the teacher for help and as a result have less homework or test issues. Students also have less information to think about during a school day than they normally would which limits some of the stress students have.

Cons of the schedule are teachers lessons have a chance to be broken up or forgotten with another day in between the last lesson taught. If a student misses a day the homework and class work begin to stack up and create more work for a student to do. According to www.nea.org “If a student misses a day under the modular schedule, that student is actually missing two, or sometimes even more days.” Also teachers are having to teach lessons inside of the quarter timeline instead of the semester timeline. This makes it hard for students to grasp the lesson quickly.”
