800 Meter Colorado High School Record
May 12, 2015
Senior Blake Yount competed in a meet at stutler bowl May, 2nd 2015 and broke the high school state record for the 800 meter run. “Stutler is one of my favorite places to compete in,” Yount said.
Yount ran the race in 1:51.20. The previous state record was also held by Blake Yount. Yount held the record along with another runner who had ran a 1:51.23 but Yount, who ran slower, was on Colorado soil when he ran and the other athlete ran on another state’s soil although he lived in Colorado. There was an asterisk next to Younts name until he ran .03 seconds faster on saturday.
Immediately after the race, Yount thought nothing of the race except that it was a “good race” and how he was proud of it.
Soon after the race, his body began to catch up with him.
“My legs were tired, my stomach hurt, I was about to throw up, my head hurt, I was a little dehydrated because it was a warm day, and all of a sudden my legs started cramping up and giving out,” Yount said.
At first, someone told Yount he ran what he wanted to run which was 1:50 and he felt accomplished with that time. When he found out he didn’t get that time he was a bit bummed, but was still glad he broke the high school state record.
Although Yount ran such a great time, he wants to go nowhere but up. Yount wants to go to national track meets and see how he stacks up with the best runners in the nation “I feel like i’m a really competitive person so direct competition like that can really push me to my full potential.” Yount said. Yount is also planning on racing at the University of Oklahoma where he committed to earlier in the school year.
Yount is a very unique runner. “I feel like I kinda stand out on my own just because of my racing style. I really like to go hard from the gun and really grind it out and i feel like i have a more aggressive standpoint on racing and i’m a lot less conservative.” Yount said.
Yount worked very hard for this record and practiced extremely hard all season. The training for track is down to a science at smoky hill. The track team has a chart that shows how they will practice all year long and how hard they will practice before and after meets and during the offseason.
