Student Government is one of the many activities students can take part in at Smoky. For freshman Zoe Agurrie, it’s her first year in Student Government.

“To be extroverted so that you are able to talk to people and communicate,” Agurrie said.

She also added that she isn’t very extroverted so student government was a way to help her communicate better. Also helped her cooperate with her group she’s working with and more getting comfortable.

To try and talk as much as I can in class just to kind of, you know, be more used to speaking in a crowd and I used to not like doing that at all at the beginning of the year but I’m doing it so often. That I’ve gotten better at it. – Zoe Agurrie

Jacob Heavers, a senior, has been in Student Government for his entire high school experience. As a result, he knows a thing or two about this subject.

“I think that one trait is that you should be able to communicate properly and get along with the people surrounding you,” Heavers said.

Communication in all aspects of life is key, and for some, this may be significantly harder. Being in Student Government allows for students who may have trouble with communication to be thrust out and face their fears, much like Agurrie. “I joined student government is because I just wanted to get it out the way and just get to know around the school and meet people so joining student government helped me communicate and meet others,” Heavers said.

“Yeah. I learned a lot of like public speaking and communicating with people working in groups. Also just trying to grow myself as a leader and like as I work with my peers throughout the years, ” Heavers said.
